God I am so excited for Pokemon Snap and hanging out with mine Boy tomorrow. It's gonna be good. 😌

star-rice

ITS GOOD. HOLY FUCK ITS GOOD. THEY NAILED IT. NOT A SINGLE FUCK UP. SOLID GAME 100% THROUGH.

This is the first game I've played for 8 hours straight, no breaks, in probably 5 years? Maybe that's a slight exaggeration ,but idc what anyone says, it's worth the $60 price tag. If you have any passion for pokemon snap, nostalgia or otherwise, the game fucking hits. It's gorgeous. It's lengthy. It just keeps giving. And there's so much to see? The replay value is there. Like, it's a full title. And its not hand holdy? There's some challenge here! I feel like it being a sequel to the original, it's absolutely warranted too.

There's a bunch I'd love to talk about in regards to it, but honestly? It's just really nice to see pokemon past gen 2 get some love. Everything seems so cohesive and there's a lot of quality of life updates. It actually feels like a polished game. This is all I could have ever wanted from a pokemon snap sequel.

The "Big Red" nickname for Mario makes sense, but every time I hear it I can't help but think of the soda drink and then that leads to the image of Mario wearing a Big Red soda can costume like he's helping advertise for it.

"It's a cruel world out there, paisano. Why don't you go treat yourself and buy a Big Red, will ya?"

I am in awe...

Saw a meme on tumblr that was bemoaning having to do certain levels of super mario sunshine (specifically the flying sandbird one) with the incredible amount of drift the joy cons are prone to and that had me think of something else I've pondered before.

How in the hell are they gonna have fludd work with the incredible lack trigger analog? And as an extension to that, since there are certain techniques that rely solely on that sensitivity, how will this change speed running for the title on the new console?

Okay, so I know it's kind of abstract to think like this, but the reason I'm losing my whole brain over Nintendo putting Super Mario Sunshine on the switch (even if it's bundled) is because I feel it sets a precedent.

iirc, this will be the first gamecube game Nintendo has released (of their own titles) on the switch. And it's one of their most popular too! Ever since the switch came out I've been puzzling over if we'd start to get rereleases of these old classics whether on a Virtual Console/Digital Only or as fully remastered/slightly updated titles. We got a lot of N64 titles on the Wii VC, right? Would they continue the trend of skipping a generation or two and put the biggest hits on the next console? Is it even worth it for them to put the manpower into either optimizing individual gamecube games for the switch or putting together an emulator? Those options are definately possible, but would Nintendo decide the effort was worth it to do? I still don't know if those questions have really been answered, but we definately have something more hopeful than we did before.

There's also bullshit to be said about this limited release of Mario 3D All-Stars, but i cannot imagine that it'll be limited forever (as on brand as that would be for Nintendo's mentality regarding accessibility and longevity of its titles). But I haven't the brain power for that shit. I've just accepted that I'm gonna preorder the physical copy and that's gonna be that.

Anyway, this is a way to put aside my giddyness and express hope that I'll get my childhood nostalgia games on my favorite and most conveinant console to date.

LOL I was incorrect when I said I had 7 days left in pikmin to get three parts + whatever there is after that.

I have 9. :')

Now that I'm fucking thinking about it, I think Pikmin is legit the first game in a long ass time I've been able to actively apply myself to without the need of literally anything else.

Like sure, I've been playing FFxiv, but with that I usually need shit on in the background and with Pikmin, all I need is the game. No music. No videos. No secondary or tertiary tasks I'm concerned with at all. Just Pikmin.

star-rice

@flowerfemme

Pikmin 2 is definately one of those sequels that takes the good base of the original and only makes it better. It listens to what the players want and does it 10 fold.

I could do an essay on all the improvements they did with Pikmin 2. They just made a bigger, better game the second time around which is truly a commendation because the first was so good all on it's own.

That said, while Pikmin 1 is only 2-3 years older, it shows it's age a lot more. I'd say it's overall easier than Pikmin 2, but less forgiving (they give you essentially a time machine in the rerelease on the Wii which mitigates this samewhat). I'd really only recommend going back and replaying it if you really want the experience of Pikmin 1. Pikmin 2 really truly feels like the quintessential Pikmin experience.

@phantomflame03

Oof I know right? As a kid it terrified me! Replaying it though? It feels p okay. It definately is a game you're meant to either just skim by on first play through (or outright fail). They 100% made it with multiple replays in mind (ie, theres a boss you can only see on or before day 15). But once you have a good grasp on the mechanics, the one part a day goal, to me, felt like an okay amount of time. I haven't finished and (spoilers) I know there is an extra area and more parts than the original 30, but it still feels like I have more than enough time (and I've been way less than efficient). I wanna say I have 3 parts left and 7ish days to get it done? So I'm hopeful. (Not to minimize childhood anxiety over the game, Im a whole ass adult now and I know childhood me was not entirely up to the task at age 9).

So, in Pikmin 1 there is an incredibly optional boss in the 4th level, The Distant Spring. Its incredibly optional because you can only find it on or before the 15th day. I certainly had never heard about it before I started poking around some strategy guides. It's supposedly as hard as or harder than the final boss, which is a huge yikes from me. Since I figured I'd never go back on a 2nd play through to fuck with it, I looked up someone beating it and yeah. No thanks.

I go back to playing my own game. I've been in the area a day or two already and I'm working my way round when I spot it. I thought "wait, how? There's no way I made it hear that early? I've already been putzing around for a while now?" I was wrong. Day 15. Last day he'd be here.

I'll take that as a positive sign I'm decentish at Pikmin after having not played for the better part of a decade.

No. I did not fight him. Fuck that.

Now that I'm 'replaying' Pikmin 1, im genuinely wondering if I ever beat it. I dont have memories of beating it. And, while I do have memories of this level, its only because its also in Pikmin 2. Everything Im dealing with is at least slightly different than I remember, which leads me to believe I never actually got this far in one.

Big hmmmmm

Replaying Pikmin 1 because, for one, its been too fucking long and, secondly, they're rereleasing Pikmin 3 for the switch which I'm hyper stoked about bc I, like many others, never invested in a WiiU and got to play it. So now I'm making my way through the first two so I can relive all the great shit about them while I wait.

nintendo put microtransactions in Sword and Shield

star-rice

My guess is that it'll be for Pokemon Home, something we already knew was coming. Nintendo is very very good about in app purchases, like, even on their mobile apps that are mostly meant to be cash grabby bc theyre free to play. I can't see them doing legit microtransactions in a $60 dollar title. I couldn't even see them doing DLC for pokemon.

jasvinfellover

If it's related to Pokemon Home i'd think they'd be in Pokemon Home and not Sword and Shield imo. Outside of the in-game purchases tag that it has on the e-store I don't think there's been any official source reporting on what they are, unfortunately.

star-rice

Well, while it may be true that Pokemon Home could be its own seperate thing, I think its more of a service than an application so I'm leaving room for them to offer it within Sword and Shield itself. It could run either way.

We really don't have much info. I personally have hope that Nintendo wouldn't be so grabby to put true microtransactions within the game. It's not something theyre infamous for, anyway. So here's to hoping that whatever they have planned is conservative in these regards.

i can’t wait for Pokemon to absolutely fucking ruin my life in one (1) weeks time. Like, absolutely destroy all clarity and stability I had, mentally, and then later in the year, destroy me financially.

Its gonna be glorious.
